Ellen Gira and Jocelyn Pettit Will Perform at Mountain City Traditional Arts
Frostburg State University’s Mountain City Traditional Arts will host Ellen Gira and Jocelyn Pettit on Wednesday, March 13, at 7 p.m. at 25 E. Main St. in Frostburg. The live entertainment is open to the public through general admission with a suggested donation of $15.
From the east coast of the U.S., Gira is an accomplished cellist who has performed throughout North America and the U.K. She has collaborated and recorded with numerous acclaimed traditional musicians and is pursuing a doctorate in Scottish music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. If her name sounds familiar, that’s because she’s the granddaughter of Dr. Catherine Gira, who served as FSU’s president for many years.
From the west coast of Canada, Pettit is a vibrant fiddle player, stepdancer and singer. With grace and passion, she has delighted audiences and ignited stages across Canada and worldwide, appeared on national television and radio, and released three multi-award-nominated albums.
Gira and Pettit were already two well-established musicians when they found in each other a kindred musical spirit and joined forces in Glasgow in 2018. With Gira on cello and Petit on fiddle, they push the boundaries between traditional and contemporary genres to create a powerfully uplifting and soulful performance. Complementing their instrumental talent with vocal harmonies and lively stepdancing, they perform a high-energy repertoire from Scotland, Ireland, North America and Scandinavia. FolkWorld Magazine has called them “A dazzling duo!”
MCTA is a program of FSU and a founding member of Maryland’s Folklife Network. It receives support from the Maryland Traditions Program of the State Arts Council.
