Gregory Scott Stuart to Perform Art Songs and Arias in FSU Faculty Artist Series Concert

Frostburg State University’s Department of Music will present baritone Gregory Scott Stuart in a Faculty Artist Series recital of art songs and arias on Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the Pealer Recital Hall of FSU’s Woodward D. Pealer Performing Arts Center. He will be accompanied by pianist Dr. Joseph Yungen. The concert is free and open to the public.

The program will include songs in six languages, including a selection from Robert Schumann’s song cycle, “Liederkreis, Op. 24,” and a group of songs by Pauline Viardot, Schumann’s friend and a leading 19th-century French mezzo-soprano and composer. Maurice Ravel’s “Don Quichotte à Dulcinée” adds a Spanish flavor, and songs by contemporary American composer Ned Rorem round out the offering of art songs. A little-known aria by Franz Joseph Haydn and an aria by Giuseppe Verdi, as well as the famous Toreador Song (“Votre toast, je peux vous le render”) from Georges Bizet’s “Carmen,” give a taste of operatic singing.

Stuart is a performer and director with broad experience in the arts, encompassing oratorio, concert and recital appearances, roles in opera and musical theatre, non-musical acting engagements and work as a stage director. A member of the music faculty at FSU, he has appeared in concerts with the Orchestra of Northern Virginia, Anne Arundel Community College, Opus Concert Theatre and the Society of the Cincinnati. In oratorio, he has performed the solos in a number of frequently performed works and was a soloist in several world premieres. He has sung numerous leading roles in opera with local and regional companies and has directed operas as well. Stuart earned his bachelor’s degree from Ithaca College and his master’s from The Academy for Classical Acting at George Washington University.
