Frostburg’s “Pirates in the Park” Welcomes Young Buccaneers, Illustrator John Manders
The Frostburg State University Children’s Literature Centre (CLC), in collaboration with the city of Frostburg, will host “Pirates in the Park” on Wednesday, July 7, in Frostburg. Activities will be held at the Glendening Park Football Field from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Gates open at 6:45 p.m. All activities on this evening of pirate merriment, tales and treats are free and open to the public.
Activities include a presentation by pirate illustrator John Manders, pirate book sales and autographing, a pirate craft and goodie bag giveaway, a treasure chest raffle and the pirate movie “Ice Age: Continental Drift.” Thirsty pirates can also pick up a “Lemonade With the Law,” hosted by the Frostburg City Police.
New this year is the “Pirate Ships for Pennies” contest. Children are encouraged to create their own pirate ship at home, using recycled materials, and bring the pirate ship to the park to be displayed in front of the stage. Audience members place donations into designated buckets to vote for their favorite ship. The contest winner receives a prize from CLC, and proceeds from the contest will be donated to the Frostburg Food Pantry. For more information or a contest entry form, visit www.frostburg.edu/clc.
All attendees are encouraged to dress as pirates, and buccaneers should bring their own lawn chairs or blankets.
Activities are designed for children ages 4 to 10 but are not limited to that age group.
In case of rain, this event will be held on Wednesday, July 14.
Be sure to check the CLC website at www.frostburg.edu/clc for Frostburg restaurant and store specials for visiting swashbucklers.
This event is sponsored by FSU’s Children’s Literature Centre, the city of Frostburg, Somerset Trust Company and Thomas Cumberland Subaru Hyundai.
