FSU Student Ayanna McDonald Will Perform Senior Saxophone Recital

Frostburg State University’s Department of Music will present student Ayanna McDonald in her senior saxophone recital on Sunday, April 2, at 3 p.m. in the Pealer Recital Hall of FSU’s Woodward D. Pealer Performing Arts Center. She will be accompanied by pianist Dr. Joseph Yungen. The concert is free and open to the public. The program consists of “Fantasia for Alto Saxophone” (1937) by Claude T. Smith, written for American saxophonist Dale Underwood; the three movements, “Allegro,” “Vivace” and “Adagio and Presto,” of “Sonata for Alto Saxophone” (1937) by Bernhard Heiden, written for and premiered by Larry Teal; and “Rapsodie for Alto Saxophone and Piano” (1975, rev. 2002) by Claude Debussy, arranged by Eugene Rousseau.

At FSU, McDonald studies under Dr. Brent Weber. She is a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., where she does public relations for the Legendary Lambda Iota Chapter, and the National Society of Leadership and Success. She has also worked for Visual Couture Modeling. McDonald has been on the Dean’s List and is the recipient of a Maryland Guarantees Access Grant, Federal Pell Grant, Talent in the Arts Scholarship IV, Howard P. Rawlings Guaranteed Access Grant, FSU Distinction Scholarship, Locke Presidential Merit Scholarship, Private Source Scholarship, Ager Smith Music Scholarship, Thelma Shockley Performing Arts Scholarship, Sandra Savile Merit Scholarship, Woodward and Virginia Pealer Scholarship, Brian and Connie Mattingly Presidential Merit Scholarship, Richards Scholarship and USM Financial Enhancement Grant. McDonald anticipates graduating in May 2023 with a bachelor’s in music with a coaching minor. She plans to become a high school band director and coach high school women’s lacrosse. McDonald attended Oxon Hill High School in Oxon Hill, Md. She is the daughter of Josette McDonald of Jacksonville, Fla.
