Frostburg State University Presents Program on Local Activist Leadership

Frostburg State University’s annual leadership residency program will focus this year on “Local Activist Leadership.” The public program will begin on Thursday, Feb. 22, with a networking reception at 5:30 p.m. in Room 133 B-C of the Alice R. Manicur Assembly Hall in Lane University Center, followed by a forum discussion and facilitated action-planning workshop, lasting to approximately 8 p.m.

The program is free and open to the local community.

The forum will feature local leaders Dr. Joy Kroeger-Mappes of the Allegany County Women’s Action Coalition, Carmen Jackson of the Allegany County NAACP and Nina Forsythe of Frack-Free Frostburg. Together, they will discuss how each organization is working locally on justice activism and how they are joining forces to build and strengthen coalitions.

Kroeger-Mappes is a founder and member of FSU’s Women’s Forum, and will attend the forum representing the Allegany County Women’s Action Coalition. She is an FSU professor emerita of philosophy.

Jackson worked at FSU for 28 years, 15 of those years as director of Residence Life and the five as assistant to the vice president of Student and Educational Services and director of the Diversity Center.

Forsythe is a founding member of Frack-Free Frostburg and was on the board of Citizen Shale during the campaign to ban fracking in Maryland. She is currently active in the Allegany County Women’s Action Coalition and the No Potomac Pipeline campaign.

Topics to be explored include current organizing approaches and plans, building and strengthening coalitions and collaborations, leadership and diversity, and strengthening communication networks that intersect standpoint concerns and organizing efforts. The event is being organized through the Communication Leadership Lab and is co-sponsored by Leadership Studies, Women's Studies and the Center for Student Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. The guest speakers will also participate in classroom discussions throughout the day. The interactive workshop portion of the program will bring the membership of these groups together with campus leaders to explore intersections of campus and local organizing efforts.
