Piano majors will perform Ludwig van Beethoven’s charming “Rondo in C Major, Op. 51 #1”, Claude Debussy’s alluring and mysterious “Danseuses de Delphes” (from his first book of Preludes), among other works. Also on the recital will be Music Education majors performing songs by Schubert, an original composition performed by the composer, and a two-piano eight-hand version of one of Antonin Dvorak’s most popular works.

Formed in 2007 in Brooklyn, New York, the masterful roots musicians of Yarn have since become known for their high-energy live performances, rich harmonies and tight musicianship. The band seamlessly integrates elements of country, folk and rock, resulting in a warm, resonant sound that has earned high praise from fans and critics alike and led to performances alongside luminaries like Dwight Yoakam, Marty Stuart and Alison Krauss. Throughout it all, they have drawn audiences into their vibrant musical web, delivering memorable songs that reverberate and linger in listeners’ hearts and souls.

Immediately following the performance, WFWM station director Chuck Dicken will join the musicians for a conversation with the audience.

Hayes, a senior from La Plata, Md., and a graduate of La Plata High School, is completing a bachelor's degree in music education with an anticipated graduation date of May 21, 2026. Her career goal is to teach middle or high school choir. She has studied with FSU vocal instructors Dr. Scott Rieker, Dr. Chung-Ting Chao and Michael Welch, and previously with Gregory Scott Stuart.

Accompanying Hayes on piano will be Dr. Joseph Yungen, collaborative pianist and faculty member in the Department of Music. The recital will also feature guest artist Erica Records, soprano.

The program explores themes of longing, sorrow, love, and resilience through a diverse selection of art songs and arias spanning the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and modern eras. The first half of the program includes:

Frostburg State University's Department of Music, Theatre and Dance is pleased to announce Chassady Redhead’s senior violin recital titled “Wind and Rain.” The performance will take place on Sunday, April 19, at 7:00 p.m. in the Pealer Recital Hall of the Woodward D. She is a member of the National Association for Music Educators (NAfME). Upon graduating on May 21, 2026, Redhead plans to pursue a Master’s degree in the MAT program at FSU and become a music teacher.

FROSTBURG, Md. — The Frostburg State University Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance invites the public to an evening of fresh, original music at “New Music from the Mountains IV” on Monday, April 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Pealer Recital Hall of the Woodward D. Pealer Performing Arts Center.

The free concert, which will also be livestreamed, features compositions and arrangements by talented FSU student composers, including Gavin Baker, Martin Harden, Zach Inglish, and Joe Rubens III. FSU music majors, faculty members, and ensembles will bring these new works to life in an intimate recital setting.

The recital continues the department’s tradition of promoting student creativity and showcasing the talent and hard work coming out of the program. Whether you’re a music lover, a fellow musician, or simply looking for an inspiring evening, “New Music from the Mountains IV” offers the opportunity at a first listen to new music from the next generation of musicians at Frostburg State University.

Founded in 1982, the Spring Festival of Children’s Literature is an annual professional conference that brings children’s literature to the beautiful mountains of Western Maryland. The Festival offers librarians, educators, students, and other advocates a unique opportunity to engage firsthand with the celebrated authors and illustrators who bring the joy of literature to life. This year our featured author/illustrators are: David Catrow, Katy Hudson, Alex London, and Lauren Castillo. Can three actors really cover thirty-seven Shakespeare plays in less than two hours? The answer is “Yes!” as the characters run across the stage and keep you guessing how they will pull off the next play. The play includes a zany version of Romeo and Juliet, reimagines Titus Andronicus as a cooking show, trashes Othello, and includes a hilarious football game which summarizes all of the histories (King John, Richard II, Richard III, Henry IV etc.), complete with sports commentary and tragic details of each character’s rise and fall from power. After the intermission, the three actors then perform (with audience participation) an incredible version of Hamlet , thus “completing” the canon in only an hour and a half!

The three-member cast is TJ Kelly (Jess Track), Kyle Wolford (Daniel Track), and Daniel Wade (Adam Track). A separate three-member cast will perform on the April 24, 2pm performance, Nik Barnes (Jess Track), Finley Manocchio (Daniel Track), and Cheyenne Daisey (Adam Track).

Frostburg State University's Department of Music, Theatre and Dance is pleased to announce the senior recital of clarinetist Lucas Lusby, titled “Love Winds.” The performance will take place on Sunday, April 26, at 7:00 p.m. in the Pealer Recital Hall of the Woodward D. Pealer Performing Arts Center. The recital is free and open to the public. Lusby will be joined by guest artists Dr. Joseph Yungen (piano) and Dr. Mark Gallagher (clarinet). Gallagher is also Lusby's FSU clarinet instructor. The program showcases a range of styles, from the warm, lyrical late-Romantic writing of Brahms — inspired by the great clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld — to the elegant Classical-to-Romantic duet writing of Finnish-Swedish clarinet virtuoso Bernhard Henrik Crusell, and the vibrant, contemporary voice of American composer Amanda Harberg.

The recital opens with Lusby and Yungen performing Brahms’ “Sonata in E-flat Major for Clarinet and Piano”, followed by Lusby and Gallagher performing Crusell’s “Clarinet Duet in D minor” (from Deux clarinettes d’une difficulté progressive). Lusby and Yungen will close the recital with Harberg’s “Sonata for B-flat Clarinet and Piano”.

Lusby is a 2022 graduate of Patuxent High School in Lusby, Md. He is the son of Jason and Valeska Lusby, also of Lusby, Md. At FSU, he has been named to the Dean’s List and is the recipient of the Robert Pusey Memorial Scholarship and the Lawrence McDonald Scholarship for Clarinet Study. He is a member of the National Association for Music Educators (NAfME). Upon graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music in May 2026, Lusby plans to become a music teacher.

FSU Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance presents An Evening of Jazz!, featuring the FSU Jazz Orchestra, directed by Dr. Brent Weber, and FSU Jazz Combo, directed by Tom Harrison. The concert is Tuesday, April 28, 2026 at 7:30 pm in the F. Perry Smith Studio Theatre in the Woodward D. Pealer Performing Arts Center.

The FSU Jazz Orchestra is trying something new this semester....Commercial Band! This band's instrumentation will be more in line with a funk or fusion ensemble which is made up of rhythm section + 5-6 wind instruments. The music presented was learned by ear and transcribed onto sheet music by the individual student - similar to what professional bands do. Rehearsals were held partly in a studio space where they had the opportunity to experience what happens in the music industry. This included hearing themselves through a digital audio workstation, using microphones, and hearing themselves back in recordings.

The music presented was selected by members of the FSU Jazz Orchestra and will include a wide variety of music from soul to Anime to video game music and beyond. Each tune represents an individual student's transcription. You will hear: “Rush” from the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack; A Soul Medley of Sam & Dave's “Hold On I'm Comin'” and Junior Walker's “Shotgun”; “Pick Up the Pieces” by Average White Band; “Papa's Got a Brand New Bag” and “The Boss” by James Brown; “Sand Ocean” from the F Zero soundtrack; “Mr. Eclectic” made famous by Laufey; “Senor Blues” by Horace Silver; “In All My Wildest Dreams” by Joe Sample; and Snarky Puppy's landmark hit “Shofukan”.

The Jazz Combo, under the direction of Tom Harrison, will explore the sounds of Brazilian Bossa Nova on selections composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Marcos Valle, and Norman Gimbel. These include “The Girl from Ipanema”, “Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars”, and “Summer Samba”. Leon Russell’s “This Masquerade”, made popular by guitarist/vocalist George Benson is played in a Bossa style as well with a touch of funk.

Vocalist Mack Taylor is featured on the Bossa tunes as well as Stevie Wonder’s “Golden Lady”, and the standard “Everything Happens to Me”. Guitarist Garrett Yoder brings the authentic Brazilian sound to the combo with the nylon string guitar.

With Max Partlow on tenor sax, Sam White on trumpet, Joe Rubens III on drums, and Harrison on bass, jazz standards also included are Kern & Hammerstein’s “All the Things you Are”, Wes Montgomery’s “Four on Six”, and the beautiful ballad “I Fall in Love Too Easily” by Jule Styne and Sammy Cahn.

“Strings Through Time” Ensemble and Studio Recital

Frostburg State University's Department of Music, Theatre and Dance is pleased to announce “Strings Through Time: A Guitar Ensemble & Studio Recital,” featuring talented student and faculty guitarists on Wednesday, April 29, at 7:30 p.m. in the Pealer Recital Hall of FSU’s Woodward D. The program showcases a diverse selection of classical and contemporary works for guitar, highlighting both solo and ensemble performances. Featured guitarists include Nicholas Mellen, Raymond Gibson, Eleanor Spence and lecturer of guitar Dr. Felipe Garibaldi.

This engaging evening offers audiences a journey through time and style, from Baroque masterpieces to modern compositions, all performed on classical guitar. The studio portion of the recital opens with two duets: Spence and Garibaldi performing Filho’s “Pequeno Prelúdio”; and Gibson and Garibaldi performing York’s “Snowflight” and “Spider Dance”, as arranged by Dr. Garibaldi. Followed by soloist Mellen performing Villa-Lobos’ “Prelude No. 1” and Brouwer’s “Danza Característica”. Concluding with trio Mellen, Gibson, and Garibaldi performing Lecuona’s “Malagueña”, as arranged by Dr. Garibaldi.

The recital will close with the FSU Guitar Ensemble performing “Americana, Op. 96a” (I. Broadway) by John Duarte; the traditional “Wayfaring Stranger,” arranged by FSU Guitar Ensemble; and “Canarios” by Gaspar Sanz.

Wade, a Bachelor of Science in Music candidate, will perform a program of beloved works from the piano repertoire, guided by FSU piano instructor Dr. Jay DeWire. The selections span the expressive depth of Romanticism, the structural clarity of the Classical era, Baroque elegance and Impressionist atmosphere.

Opening the program is the deeply melancholic and introspective work “Nocturne in F minor, Op. 55 No. 1” by Frédéric Chopin that is characterized by an obsessive, circling main theme that conveys a sense of fate or destiny. The piece features a dramatic middle section of turbulent octaves before returning to a quiet, resigned close. Wade follows this with one of Beethoven’s lighter and more witty early sonatas, “Piano Sonata, Op. 14 No. 2” (often called Piano Sonata No. 10 in G major). This three-movement work blends Classical elegance with playful humor. It includes a graceful first movement, a charming theme-and-variations second movement, and a lively scherzo finale.

Wade opens the second half of the program with Bach’s graceful and elegant Baroque dance suite “French Suite No. 3 in B minor, BWV 814”. The suite alternates seductive melodic lines with brilliant virtuosity, showcasing Bach’s mastery of keyboard writing in a refined, dance-inspired style. The recital concludes with Debussy’s “Préludes, Livre 1” (X. La cathédrale engloutie), a quintessential Impressionist masterpiece inspired by the Breton legend of a sunken cathedral that rises from the sea on clear days. The piece vividly evokes misty atmospheres, distant bells, chanting voices, and massive organ-like chords, building to a majestic climax before sinking back into silence.

This recital represents a major milestone for Wade as he prepares to graduate from on May 21 with a Bachelor of Science in Music. A 2019 graduate of Bowie High School, Wade is the son of Kenneth and Sandra Wade of Bowie, Md. Following graduation, he plans to continue his studies in FSU’s Master of Arts in Teaching – music program with the goal of becoming a music teacher. He is a member of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME).

Can three actors really cover thirty-seven Shakespeare plays in less than two hours? The answer is “Yes!” as the characters run across the stage and keep you guessing how they will pull off the next play. The play includes a zany version of Romeo and Juliet, reimagines Titus Andronicus as a cooking show, trashes Othello, and includes a hilarious football game which summarizes all of the histories (King John, Richard II, Richard III, Henry IV etc.), complete with sports commentary and tragic details of each character’s rise and fall from power. After the intermission, the three actors then perform (with audience participation) an incredible version of Hamlet , thus “completing” the canon in only an hour and a half!

The three-member cast is TJ Kelly (Jess Track), Kyle Wolford (Daniel Track), and Daniel Wade (Adam Track). A separate three-member cast will perform on the April 24, 2pm performance, Nik Barnes (Jess Track), Finley Manocchio (Daniel Track), and Cheyenne Daisey (Adam Track).

The Frostburg State University Department of Music will present composer and percussionist Dr. Mackenzie Jacob LaMont in a Faculty Artist Series concert on Monday, May 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the Pealer Recital Hall of FSU’s Woodward D. Pealer Performing Arts Center. This event is free and open to the public; it will also be live-streamed, click the red 'Join Stream' button on this page to view the live performance.

The program is entitled A Concert Unlike The One You Were Expecting - Compositions by Mackenzie Jacob LaMont. The concert features performers Mackenzie Jacob LaMont, Brent Weber, Joseph Yungen, Cheyenne Jeffries, Joseph Louie, the FSU Saxophone Quartet, and the FSU Alumni Percussion Ensemble.

LaMont (b. 1989) is an active composer, percussionist, music educator, music copyist and arranger and audio engineer. His recent compositions have been focused on the environment as well as political and philosophical issues, with the sound world inhabiting a space somewhere between minimalism and post-progressive rock (with dashes of randomness here and there). He is an assistant professor at FSU where he teaches percussion lessons and ensemble, composition lessons and various courses within the music industry track, for which he is the coordinator. LaMont has a DMA in music composition with a cognate in percussion from the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music, where he studied composition with Michael Fiday, Joel Hoffman and Douglas Knehans, and percussion with James Culley and Allen Otte. He holds prior degrees in composition, percussion performance and music technology/recording, and previously studied composition and percussion at the University of Indianapolis with John Berners and Paul Berns respectively.
