FSU’s Department of Music to Present Woodwind Studio Recital
Frostburg State University’s Department of Music will present the Woodwind Studio in an evening of saxophone, flute and clarinet music on Sunday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. in the Pealer Recital Hall of FSU’s Woodward D. Pealer Performing Arts Center. The concert will also feature the FSU Saxophone Quartet. Accompaniment will be provided by pianist Joseph Yungen. This event is free and open to the public.
The program for Dr. Brent Weber’s saxophone studio includes “Allegro” from “Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano” by Lawson Lunde, performed by Jonathan Kidwell; the well-known “Prelude” from “Suite No. 1, BWV 1007” by Johann Sebastian Bach and arranged by Ramon Ricker, performed by Caitlyn Rund; and the lively and technically challenging “Allegro con moto” from “Concertino da Camera” by Jacques Ibert, performed by Eric Foreman.
The FSU Saxophone Quartet will perform “Introduction et Variations sur une Ronde Populaire” by Gabriel Pierne, one of the most “complete” of the French composers, who was able to evoke many shades of emotion and feeling, and “Ulla in Africa” by Heiner Wiberny, a German jazz saxophonist and flutist.
The program for Marla Nistico’s flute studio includes “Syrinx for Solo Flute” by Claude Debussy, performed by Jennafer Stevey. The short flute solo “Syrinx” was composed in 1913 to accompany a scene in Gabriel Mourey’s play “Psyché,” in which the Green mythological character Pan dies. Also on the program are “Ballade for Flute and Piano” by Albert Périlhou, performed by Alexandra Hill, and “Sunday Morning for Flute and Piano” by Ian Clarke, performed by Shefali Shah.
The program for Dr. Mark Gallagher’s clarinet studio includes “Sonata in B-flat Major, Op. 167” by Camille Saint-Saëns, performed by Carmen Grimes; “Sonatina for Clarinet and Piano” by Malcomb Arnold, performed by Joshua Bittinger; “Romanzen, Op. 94” by Robert Schumann, performed by Elizabeth Munger; “Piece en Sol Mineur” by Joseph Barat, performed by Linda Bryson; and “Trois Pieces, Op. 20” by Rene de Boisdeffre, performed by Patience Loscomb.
