FSU Summer Music Academy Concert Series Opens With Chamber Concert

Opening Frostburg State University’s Summer Music Academy Concert Series, world-renowned artists will perform a Chamber Concert with a program of music by Ludwig van Beethoven, Robert Schumann, Astor Piazzolla and Evan K. Chambers on Monday, July 23, at 7 p.m. in the Pealer Recital Hall of FSU’s Woodward D. Pealer Performing Arts Center.

The chamber concert will feature guest artists and FSU faculty and instructors, including violist Jeremy Kienbaum, cellist Charlie Powers and trombonist Dr. Huai-en Tsai, as well as FSU’s own Dr. Mark Gallagher on clarinet, Dr. Brent Weber on alto saxophone, Dr. Joseph Yungen on piano and Dr. Shu-Ting Yao on the violin.

The program will feature Beethoven’s “Duet ‘With Two Eyeglasses Obbligato,’” Schumann’s “Märchenerzählungen, Op. 132,” “Oblivion, for Cello, Trombone and Piano” by Piazzolla and Chambers’ “Come Down Heavy! For Saxophone, Violin and Piano.”

Keinbaum has been recognized internationally for his musical achievements, including winning first prize in the 2015 Enkor International Chamber Music Competition. He has performed in Carnegie Hall, appeared on the TODAY show and premiered numerous works.

Powers, a cellist with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, was previously assistant principal cellist of “The President’s Own” U.S. Marine Chamber Orchestra. He founded critically acclaimed chamber ensembles and collaborated with renowned artists, including Yo-Yo Ma.

Tsai, principal trombonist of the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Washington, performs as a solo, chamber and orchestral musician. He has presented his research about trombone performance history and methods at national and international conferences.

Gallagher, associate professor of clarinet and music theory, has performed with the Washington Opera, U.S. Navy Band, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Chamber Orchestra and the New York City Ballet Orchestra, among others. He is an active chamber musician and co-founder of I Venti Semplice.

Weber, assistant professor of saxophone at FSU and chair of the Department of Music, performs internationally. He taught for two years at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music in China, then returned to earn his doctorate in Musical Arts. He also coordinates FSU’s jazz studies program.

Yungen, lecturer of piano, has succeeded as a soloist, collaborative artist, new music advocate and teacher. He was a C.V. Starr Doctoral Fellow at Julliard and featured soloist in 2013 in the Hans Abrahamsen Concerto for Piano and Orchestrawith Musica Nova.

Yao, a lecturer in violin, is the assistant principal second violin at the National String Symphonia. Notable recent performances were the inauguration of Caroline Kennedy in the Japanese Embassy and then-U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry’s lecture in Washington, D.C.

The FSU Summer Music Academy was created with the mission to promote classical music education, and its goal is to develop individual musicianship for string, woodwind, brass and piano instrumentalists in a supportive environment. The academy brings top artists from around the world to the Western Maryland region to inspire local residents and develop interest in music programs in all types of educational systems.

Admission is $20 for adults; $10 for students, seniors, veterans/military and FSU faculty and staff; and free for children 12 and younger. Tickets are available at the door, payment by cash only.
