FSU Children’s Literature Centre Hosts 14th Annual Storybook Holiday
Frostburg State University’s Children’s Literature Centre will begin its season of cheer with its 14th annual Storybook Holiday celebration on Saturday, Dec. 2, in downtown Frostburg. The festivities begin at 8 a.m. and end with a holiday-themed movie, “Holiday Inn,” starting at 7:30 p.m.
The event is welcoming to all ages and features a parade, cookie decorating, storybook readings, trolley rides and many more family-friendly activities. In addition, attendees get the chance to meet Santa and authors/illustrators Joan Waites and Lezlie Evans.
The day of events begins with Breakfast With the Elves at 8 a.m. at Hotel Gunter. Tickets are $6 per person and are sold in advance at the hotel. After a delicious breakfast, some of the elves will battle one another in the Elf Olympics at the Broadway parking lot at 9:30 a.m. When the friendly competition ends, attendees can view the Mountain City Center for the Arts kickoff performance before the parade in front of Gunter Hotel. The fun run, Run Your Bells Off for Autism, will start the parade at 10:30 a.m.
Following the parade, from 11 a.m. to noon, Tail Waggin’ Tutors will provide storybook readings at the Frostburg Community Library. There will also be readings from noon to 1 p.m. at United Methodist Church and from 1 to 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, both on Main Street. At 11:30 a.m., the Frostburg Dance Academy will perform at the Broadway parking lot.
In addition, a variety of high-spirited seasonal activities will take place at City Place, 14 S. Water St., from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the Elves’ Secret Workshop, letter writing to Santa, photos with elves and a miniature train display. Trolley rides will be available during the event.
Authors/Illustrators Waites and Evans will begin at 11:30 a.m. with their presentations at the Frostburg Community Center. Later, from 2 to 3 p.m., they will host book signings at City Place. Both are authors of various books; Waites is the author of “An Artist’s Night Before Christmas” and Evans is the illustrator of “Finding Christmas.”
Free cookie decorating and a cookie contest will take place from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at Gunter Hotel. Awards for this contest will be announced at City Place at 5 p.m. At 4 p.m. in the Lyric Theatre, 20 E. Main St., the children’s play “A Storybook Holiday Mystery,” written by Ann Buskirk and directed by Josh Mallow, will be presented. Admission is free.
As the activities of the day come to an end, the Festival of Trees takes place at City Place from 5 to 6 p.m. Celebrators will meet Santa, cookie contest awards will be announced and live entertainment will be presented. The last activity takes place at the Palace Theatre at 7:30 p.m., with a showing of the 1942 movie classic “Holiday Inn,” featuring the music of Irving Berlin and starring Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire. Tickets are being sold in advance at Main Street Books and cost $5 per person.
