FSU Dance Company presents “Taking the Movement” for Spring Dance Concert

On May 10 and 11 at 7:30 p.m. the FSU Dance Company will present ”Taking the Movement”  for the spring dance concert, an exploration of movement through a variety of dance styles.  Sponsored by the Department of Theatre and Dance, both performances will take place in the Drama Theatre of FSU’s Performing Arts Center.

Seniors Caitlin Moore and Niki Newcomb will present their final choreography at FSU before graduation in May. Known for her high energy dance moves, Moore’s piece focuses on the dilemma of wanting to live the life you pictured while being pulled toward the ”safe life others direct you to lead.” In contrast, Newcomb’s piece titled “RINSE” is lyrical illustration about the strength it takes to wash, or rinse, a negative relationship from one’s life.

Focusing on the longevity of forgiveness, Junior Amy Milligan will present an intricately blended contemporary dance that will leave audience members wanting more.

In addition to five student choreographed works, Director Jamie McGreevy will stage four original pieces, including “RAW,” which debuted in 2010 and has evolved through an ongoing collaboration with dancers Samantha Flowers and Jordan Kline. Recently presented at the American College Dance Festival, the duet received favorable reviews from renowned artists Seán Curran, Shani Collins Achille, and George de la Peña. Flowers will also perform a solo choreographed by McGreevy based on the poetry of Jewel Mathieson.

A dialog about embracing the positive in life threads together the nine pieces of this year’s Spring Dance concert. Filled with energy and striking dance moves, “Taking the Movement” promises to be an entertaining concert experience.
