FSU Student Matthew Purnell to Present Senior Piano Recital
Frostburg State University student Matthew A. Purnell will present a senior piano recital on Sunday, April 13, at 3 p.m. in the Pealer Recital Hall of FSU’s Performing Arts Center. The recital is free and open to the public.
Purnell will begin his recital with “Prelude and Fugue Book II, No. 6 in D Minor,” by Johann Sebastian Bach. He will then play “Nocturne in B Major, Op. 32, No. 1,” “Polonaise in C-sharp Minor, Op. 26, No. 1” and “Prelude in G Minor, Op. 28, No. 22” by Frédéric Chopin, a Polish composer from the Romantic era. Following intermission, Purnell will play “Romance in A-flat Major, Op. 17, No. 3” by Gabriel Fauré, one of the leading French composers of the late 19th century. Next, he will play “No. 3, In the Old Castle” and “No. 13, On the Holy Mount” of Antonín Dvořák’s “Poetic Tone Poems, Op. 85.” He will finish with “Deep River No. 10” from the English composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s “Twenty-Four Negro Melodies, Op. 59.”
A 2008 graduate of Laurel High School in Laurel, Md., Purnell graduated in December with a bachelor’s degree in music. He is a member of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia of America. He is the son of Kathy Purnell of Laurel.
