FSU’s Children’s Literature Centre, Frostburg First to Host “Pirates Ahoy!”

The Frostburg State University Children’s Literature Centre, in collaboration with Frostburg First, will host this year’s “Pirates Ahoy!” event on Wednesday, July 10. Activities will be held in City Place, 14 S. Water St., and a guest author will present at 10 and 11 a.m. in the Lyric Building, 20 E. Main St. All events are free and open to the public.

Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen, an accomplished author who has published fiction and non-fiction for children, will present to children in her Pirate Den in the Lyric Building. Her first picture book, “Tightrope Poppy, the High-Wire Pig,” was published in 2006. She has published 25 books, including “The Pirate Princess,” “Half-Pint Pete the Pirate” and “Chicks Run Wild.”

Buccaneer activities, including crafts and a treasure hunt, will take place throughout the day. Visitors will be challenged to discover the secret pirates’ den, where pirate stories and songs will be shared. All are encouraged to dress as pirates.

This year, the PNC Foundation, through its Grow Up Great initiative, will bring its “Mobile Learning Adventure” tent to the City Place parking lot. Young children, accompanied by a caregiver, can have much fun with interactive learning kiosks, a “When I Grow Up” photo opportunity, a craft station and plenty of giveaways.

Frostburg businesses and restaurants will be open, with special bargains for visiting buccaneers.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. in City Place and the Lyric Building. Space is limited. Pirate crews of five or more are encouraged to contact the Centre to reserve spaces. Large groups must register at the Lyric Building.
