Maryland Industrial Partnerships Program to Host Research Funding Briefing at FSU

The Maryland Industrial Partnerships Program (MIPS), which provides funding for university-based research projects, will host a free briefing about how faculty and local businesses can participate in its funding program on Tuesday, March 11, from 3 to 5 p.m., in Frostburg State University’s Compton Science Center, room 237.

Ronnie Gist, MIPS acting associate director, will give a presentation, followed by a Q&A session and one-on-one meetings.

MIPS funding goes directly to faculty for research that benefits a company’s ability to develop and commercialize new products. Other MIPS funding benefits include cost-effective research collaborations, improved university facilities, efficient transfers of technology from universities to companies and increased student employment opportunities.

In addition to supporting research projects with more than 400 Maryland companies since 1987, MIPS has supported various projects with FSU, including companies such as Instant Access Networks in Cumberland and Sustainable Systems, Inc., in Frostburg. Current MIPS projects at FSU include faculty collaborations with funding for the Cumberland-based Berkeley Springs Instruments and the Hagerstown-based vCalc, LLC.

MIPS funds an average of 30 projects per year. Supported research may be in engineering, computer science, physical, environmental and life sciences. MIPS also supports projects designed to help a company plan and develop industrial training programs for its employees. Applications are due each year by May 1 and Oct. 15.

For more information about the MIPS briefing, contact Linda Steele, program specialist at FSU, at 301-687-4137 or lsteele@frostburg.edu.
