#international_film-seawords_journeyEl viaje hacia el mar is a quiet road movie based on a short story by Juan José Morosoli (1899-1957) an important literary figure in Uruguay. It is a charming, witty, and gentle comedy of manners that can be viewed as a leisurely variation of Maryland’s “going down the ocean” tradition. On a Sunday morning in 1963, six men (and a dog) travel from the small, interior town of Minas to the Atlantic Ocean. Most of the men have never left their insular community so this outing becomes the trip of a lifetime. Driving through the rolling landscape of Uruguay, the men talk, drink, sing, and share their lives and philosophies. Throughout the day, a series of banal events reveals the idiosyncracies of each colorful character: Rodriguez, a taciturn truck driver; Vasco, a drunk laborer; Rataplan, a simple street sweeper; Quintana, a cranky gravedigger; Seven, a clever lottery ticket salesman; and The Stranger. How will they react when they finally see the ocean? Their responses will probably make you smile and nod your head in understanding.
