The film is based on the legendary true story of the red dog who united an isolated mining community while wandering the Australian outback in search of his master. Red Dog is set during the 1970s in Dampier, Western Australia located about 950 miles north of Perth, 1650 miles southwest of Darwin, and 900 miles south of Jakarta, Indonesia. This very remote town was established in 1965 by Hamersley Iron to take advantage of the natural resources in the Pilbara region. Even today the population is only about 1500. The film highlights the sparse and unique landscape of this craggy area.
