An excellent example of Direct Cinema, Občan Havel provides an intimate portrait of arguably one of the most important political leaders in Europe. The film traces 12 years in the life of Václav Havel (1936-2011): playwright and essayist; co-founder of Charter 77; imprisoned Communist dissident; voice of the Velvet Revolution; ninth (and last) president of Czechoslovakia (1989-1992); first president of the Czech Republic (1993-2003); founder of Forum 2000; and chairman of the Human Rights Foundation Board of Directors and International Council. His legendary status most recently manifested itself in the 5 October 2012 renaming of the Prague Airport as the Václav Havel Airport Prague.
