FSU Vocal Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo to Perform “Pass Me the Jazz”
Join the Frostburg State University Vocal Jazz Ensemble and FSU Jazz Combo for “Pass Me the Jazz” on Tuesday, Dec. 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the Pealer Recital Hall of FSU’s Performing Arts Center. This concert is free and open to the public.
The FSU Jazz Combo, under the direction of Tom Harrison, will begin the performance with many popular jazz works, including “A Night in Tunisia” by Dizzy Gillespie and Frank Paparelli, “Take Five” by Paul Desmond, and “Cantaloupe Island” and “Tell Me a Bedtime Story” by Herbie Hancock. Additionally, the combo will perform works by Isam Jones, Jerome Kern and Richard Rogers.
The FSU Vocal Jazz Ensemble, now in its fifth season at FSU, features 14 singers and a student jazz combo. Under the direction of Dr. James Reddan, the new director of Choral Activities, and accompanied by Dr. Brent Weber, the ensemble will perform numbers featuring a variety of vocal jazz styles, including samba selections “Mas Que Nada,” as performed by Brasil 66, and “One Note Samba”; “Operator,” a favorite of the Manhattan Transfer; and “Pass Me the Jazz” by Anders Edenroth, written for The Real Group.
The concert will finish with a performance of the Pentatonix version of “Carol of the Bells,” a popular tune performed in the a cappella style, re-examining the use of meter, rhythm and harmony to bring this piece to life for the holiday season.
