Aubrey Bodine’s Historic Western Maryland Photos Coming to FSU

A second show of historic Western Maryland images made by renowned photographer A. Aubrey Bodine will open in Frostburg State University’s Stephanie Ann Roper Gallery in the Fine Arts Building on Monday, May 21. The exhibit, “Master Black-and-White Photographer A. Aubrey Bodine: Western Maryland Images From the 1940s-1960s,” will run through Friday, June 29.

Featuring images from Allegany, Garrett and Washington counties, Bodine’s photos document the passing of an older, nearly forgotten, era of landmarks and traditions in Western Maryland. A native of Boonsboro, Md., Bodine was a photojournalist for the Baltimore Sun from the 1930s until his death in 1970. In photographic circles around the world, he is regarded as one of the finest pictorial photographers of the 20th century.

Bodine is known especially for his iconic images of the ships and workers of the Chesapeake Bay and Baltimore harbor. Less known, however, are the more than 30 years he spent capturing rural scenes and environmental portraits of farmers, craft workers and outdoor enthusiasts in the western part of the state.

At the close of the exhibit, FSU graduate Martin Heavner, Class of 1992, will donate a collection of 38 of Bodine’s black-and-white photographs to the University. This generous donation was made possible, in part, through the efforts of the Allegany Arts Council.

This spring’s two-phase show – the photos were previously on display in a Cumberland gallery – is made possible by a grant from FSU, support from the Allegany Arts Council and cooperation from Bodine’s daughter, Jennifer Bodine, the curator of his prints.

Roper Gallery hours are noon to 4 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday. For more information, contact FSU’s Department of Visual Arts at 301-687-4797.
