FSU Student DeAndre Cook to Present Junior Trombone Recital

Frostburg State University student DeAndre Cook will present his junior trombone recital on Sunday, April 14, at 7 p.m. in the Pealer Recital Hall of FSU’s Woodward D. Pealer Performing Arts Center. Cook will be accompanied by pianist Dr. Joseph Yungen. This event is free and open to the public.

Cook’s program will include “Daybreak” by Nicola Ferro, “Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra” by Launy Grondahl, “Liebesleid” (“Love’s Sorrow”) by Fritz Kreisler, “Vocalise” by Sergei Rachmaninoff and “Trombone Concertino in E-flat Major” by Ferdinant David.

Ferro’s “Daybreak” was composed in 2003 as the first part of a four-movement suite titled “Tetralogy of the Sun” that was composed for and dedicated to Joseph Alessi. In this suite, Ferro borrows from the musical heritage of his homeland, Italy, particularly the operatic traditions.

“Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra” is a two-movement piece written in 1924 by Danish composer Grondalh during his time in Italy. It was dedicated to Vilhelm Aarkrogh, a member of the Royal Orchestra and was inspired by the trombone section of the Orchestra of the Casino Theatre in Copenhagen.

Kreisler’s “Liebesleid” (“Love’s Sorrow”) is one piece from a three-piece violin and piano set, “Alt-Wiener Tanzweisen,” published in 1905. Kreisler was an Austrian-born violinist and composer. One of the most noted violin masters of his day, he was known for his sweet tone and expressive phrasing.

“Vocalise” was written by Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff in 1912 as the last of his “14 Songs” or “14 Romances.” “Vocalise” has a melancholy undertone that reflects Rachmaninoff’s dark mood at this time, as Russia struggled through World War I and hovered on the brink of revolution. It was dedicated to soprano Antonina Nezhdanova.

“Trombone Concertino in E-flat Major” is a three-movement piece written in 1837 by German violinist and composer Ferdinand David. It was dedicated to Karl Traugott Queisser, who was a good friend of David and played in the Gewandhaus Orchestra, where David was concertmeister.

Cook studies under Clayton Heath at FSU. He previously studied under Kevin Memanus, Joshua Long and Dave Perkel of FSU. Cook is a member of Phi Mu Alpha – International Music Fraternity and Phi Sigma Pi. Cook anticipates graduating in May 2020 with a bachelor’s degree in music. A graduate of Westlake High School in Waldorf, Md., he is the son of Carla Saxton, Gerome Saxton and Robert Cook.
