FSU’s Center for Literary Arts Hosts a Reading by Pulitzer Prize-Winning Poet
Frostburg State University’s Center for Literary Arts will host a reading by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Stephen Dunn on Wednesday, Dec. 12, at 7:30 p.m. at Main Street Books, 2 E. Main St. in Frostburg, as a part of the 2018 Fall Reading Series.
Dunn will read from his upcoming book of essays, published by Tiger Bark Press, titled “Degrees of Fidelity: Essays on Poetry and the Latitudes of the Personal.” “Degrees of Fidelity” is Dunn’s second collection of essays.
Dunn has written more than a dozen books of poetry, which include the National Poetry Series Prize-winning “Local Time (1986),” the Pulitzer Prize-winning “Different Hours (2000)” and, more recently, “Keeper of Limits (2015).” His 19th collection of poetry will be published by Norton in fall 2019.
Dunn’s poetry reflects the social, cultural, philosophical and psychological aspects of the American middle class. His poems represent the everyday lives of people and how to coexist in the world on a day-to-day basis. Dunn, who lives in Frostburg, usually uses a more subtle and easygoing tone in his poems, which sets him apart from other poets. He’s been described as “one of our most prolific and consistent poets … level-headed, witty, conversational in his diction and willing to see in domestic life his means of attaining and imparting wisdom.”
In addition to the Pulitzer and National Poetry Series Prize, Dunn has been the recipient of many other awards, including fellowships from the Guggenheim and Rockefeller Foundations, an Academy Award in Literature from the Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Levinson Prize from Poetry Magazine. Dunn is also a distinguished professor of creative writing at Stockton University in Galloway, N.J.
