FSU’s Children’s Literature Centre, Frostburg First to Host “Pirates Ahoy!”
The Frostburg State University Children’s Literature Centre, in collaboration with Frostburg First, will once again host this year’s “Pirates Ahoy!” event on Wednesday, July 9, Activities will be held at City Place, 14 S. Water St., and a guest author will speak at 10 and 11 a.m. in the Palace Theatre on Main Street. All events are free and open to the public.
Children attending this year’s Pirates Ahoy! event will have the opportunity to meet Melinda Long, author of the popular books “How I Became a Pirate” and “Pirates Don’t Change Diapers.” Both books were illustrated by David Shannon, a Caldecott honoree.
Buccaneer activities, including crafts and a treasure hunt, will take place throughout the day. Visiting pirates will be challenged to discover the secret pirates’ den, where pirate stories and songs will be shared. All are encouraged to dress as pirates.
For the first time, Mountain City Center for the Arts will put on a display of the best pirate shenanigans and tomfoolery. “Pirates Spectacular,” an interactive performance, will take place in the City Place parking lot, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
Frostburg businesses and restaurants will be open, with special bargains for visiting buccaneers.
Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. at City Place. Space is limited. Pirate crews of five or more are encouraged to contact the Centre to reserve spaces. Smaller groups must register at City Place.
