“Case Study of a Girl: Loss and Resilience” to Be Presented at FSU

New Day Campaign founder Peter Bruun and actress, storyteller and dancer Maria Broom will present the program “Case Study of a Girl: Loss and Resilience” as part of the Resilience Project at Frostburg State University’s Catherine R. Gira Center for Communications and Information Technology room 397 on Friday, Oct. 19, at 3:30 p.m. This program, free and open to the public, is presented by the Allegany Arts Council, the New Day Campaign and FSU.

Bruun will share “Elisif’s Story,” a 35-minute video about the life and death of his daughter from a heroin overdose, and a display of her art. The event offers a portrait of loss and tools for resilience.

Broom will offer an interactive performance, addressing such topics as how inwardness helps us heal and find resilience, and the role of love, hope and spirit in seeking and maintaining wellness. After the exercise, she will share her signature story of “Amma and Her Secret Dances.”

Nationally known as an actress for her recurring roles on HBO’s “The Wire” and “The Corner,” Broom is also a storyteller and dancer with more than 40 years of experience as a performer and teacher in the U.S. and around the world.

The event will include resource information for those affected by mental health challenges and/or substance use.

The Resilience Project is a wide-ranging, month-long community program using art and community to address the issues and stigma surrounding substance abuse and mental health disorders. For information, visit , www.mariabroom.com and www.alleganyartscouncil.org.
