FSU to Present Black History NECESSARY! Exhibit, Talk by Professor Griff
Frostburg State University’s Diversity Center will present the Black History 101 Mobile Museum’s NECESSARY! Exhibit, with guest speaker Professor Griff from the hip hop group Public Enemy. The exhibit will be on display on Monday, Feb. 25, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Griff will speak at 5 p.m., both in the Lane University Center Alice R. Manicur Assembly Hall. This event is free and open to the public.
Griff is an internationally renowned educator, writer, producer, musician, platinum recording/spoken word artist, lecturer and founding member of the pioneering and revolutionary hip hop group Public Enemy. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in education, is a licensed personal security defense instructor and an accomplished martial artist. Griff will speak on Malcolm X's influence on Public Enemy, the significance of being inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and the future of Public Enemy.
The NECESSARY! Exhibit has over 150 rare artifacts that span the Black experience with a specific focus on the life and legacy of Malcolm X. Starting with artifacts from slavery, a context is built on the development and need for a revolutionary leader like Malcolm X. The continuity of struggle through the Black experience in America and Malcolm's influence is shown through the eras of slavery, Jim Crow, the Nation of Islam, the Black Power Movement and hip hop. This story is told through rare photographs, magazines, letters, figurines, posters, newspapers and other memorabilia.
This event is a joint effort by Dr. Amy Branam, the Black Student Alliance, the Lane University Center Staff and the Diversity Center. Financial support is also provided by the President’s Office; African-American Studies Program; the departments of Communication Studies, English, Mass Communications and Sociology, Leadership Studies Program, Learning Communities Program and the President’s Advisory Council for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
