A Civil War Christmas: An American Musical Celebration

By Paula Vogel; Music by Daryl Waters

Celebrate the Season with "A Civil War Christmas"

“A rich and moving play with music… "A Civil War Christmas" taps into seasonal themes of redemption, forgiveness and community, with a decidedly American bent.” ~Variety

Move over Scrooge and make room for President and Mrs. Lincoln, Walt Whitman, Clara Barton, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, and a tapestry of fictional and other historical figures as they mingle to tell a new American holiday story.

Directed by Mairzy Yost-Rushton, with Musical Direction by Chris McCabe, performances will take place in Frostburg State University’s Performing Arts Center on November 30, December1, 5, 6, 7 and 8 at 7:30 pm, with matinee performances December 1 and 8 at 2:00 pm.

It’s Christmas Eve, 1864 – a pivotal time in American history – and Washington, D.C. is piercingly cold. Traditional songs, spirituals, poetry, and folk tales stitch three stories together: a fugitive from slavery desperately searches the streets for her lost daughter; the ideologies of rebel and union soldiers are challenged on the banks of the Potomac; and President and Mrs. Lincoln plot and scheme to give one another the perfect Christmas gift.

By the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "How I Learned to Drive," this epic play moves with the urgency of battle, but with an ending focused on community, family, and hope.
